Sukoon Houseboat

Sukoon Houseboat, Rainawari, Srinagar
The Sukoon Houseboat, located in Rainawari, Srinagar, is an exquisite floating residence situated on the picturesque Dal Lake. This luxurious houseboat offers a unique and opulent experience for its guests.

The Venue

Dal Lake, known as the Heart of Srinagar, is encircled by snow-capped mountains on three sides and adorned with houseboats, vibrant shikaras, and Mughal gardens and orchards along its banks. Embarking on a shikara ride allows you to explore the intricate waterways and channels of this iconic lake in Kashmir, providing a glimpse into the daily life on Dal Lake. You'll often hear the cheerful boatmen calling out, "Madam, Kahwa?" as they sell the special Kashmiri tea on the lake, while others offer flowers, ornaments, jewelry, handicrafts, and even fruits and snacks.

Throughout the day, local men, women, and children navigate their slender boats across the lake. As the day draws to a close, the sunsets grace the sky with hues of vibrant orange and golden, offering breathtaking views of the Pir Panjal mountains in the distance.

Staying on a houseboat on Dal Lake is a remarkable experience unique to Kashmir and holds an intriguing part of its historical heritage. Initially built by the British in response to the Dogra Kings, who prohibited land sales to the British, these houseboats allowed them to establish a semblance of England in Kashmir, taking advantage of the absence of restrictions on living on water. However, these houseboats, known as 'behaz' (cargo boats with open attics) and 'dongas,' were an integral part of Kashmir's heritage long before the arrival of the British. Today, many local Kashmiris call them home.

The floating gardens, locally known as "Rad" in Kashmiri, offer a captivating sight, particularly when lotus flowers bloom between July and August. Nestled amidst these gardens, in a tranquil corner of the lake, with panoramic views of the misty Pir Panjal mountains, hilltop forts, and temples, lies Sukoon Houseboat. Meticulously restored, it seamlessly combines the nostalgic allure of a traditional houseboat with modern comforts.

Sukoon stands as an eco-conscious houseboat in Srinagar, ensuring that no waste is discharged into the lake. Equipped with a bio-tank, it exemplifies the future of sustainable tourism.

The en-suite bathrooms are generously sized and feature a bathtub and a separate standalone shower. Additionally, located at the end of a lengthy corridor, the Shalimar Bagh room serves as a spacious family suite capable of accommodating four individuals.

Designed with original intricately carved wood paneling, ornate chandeliers, graceful ceiling fans, pine floors, and colonial-style furniture, the rooms blend timeless charm with a contemporary touch. The excellent cream linens harmonize with the vibrant silks, further enhancing the room's ambiance. The ceilings boast intricate khatamband paneling throughout, while large windows invite ample natural light. The sundeck provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Zabarwan mountains.

Dining experiences at Sukoon are a treat for the senses, offering a delightful selection of traditional Kashmiri, Indian, and continental cuisine. Guests have the option to dine indoors at the multi-cuisine restaurant or enjoy their meals on the sun deck, named Fizaa. The sun deck provides a 360-degree view of the lake and the surrounding mountains, creating a perfect setting for a morning breakfast under the gentle sun, accompanied by steaming cups of kahwa. As the day winds down, a high tea service is arranged on the deck, featuring delicious pakodas (fritters) and sandwiches, allowing guests to savor the sunset. For a truly romantic experience, Sukoon offers the option of a private candlelight dinner under the moonlit sky, with distant lights twinkling on the mountains, creating a picturesque backdrop.
