The Venue

Shahpura, located 220km from Jaipur, offers a delightful experience for travelers who wish to indulge in slow travel. The beautifully restored royal home provides an ideal setting to pause and relish the countryside with luxurious comforts. It's a great stopover for those who want to explore authentic Rajasthan, with easy access to Udaipur, Ranthambore, and Jodhpur.

The estate was granted by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to Rajadhiraj Sujjan Singh in 1630 AD in recognition of his successful military campaigns against the Marathas and Afghans. Even today, the heirs of the estate keep the memories of their ancestors alive. The grand mansions - Nahar Niwas and Umed Niwas - have been restored to their original grandeur, while retaining their boutique charm.

Shahpura is home to over 250 small lakes, making it a paradise for bird watchers with more than 180 bird species to be spotted. The closest lake is just a stroll away, and the property is perfect for both novice and experienced birders. With only nine rooms spread across a 40-acre estate, Shahpura Bagh offers curated excursions, alfresco dining, and visits to craft centers in the village, making it the perfect destination for a slow travel experience full of discovery.

Who is hosting?

Shahpura Bagh's estate and building were once part of the summer residence of the rulers of Shahpura, and now the gracious hosts are the heirs to the former rulers. Sat, Jai, Maya, and the next generation with Tamiksha have taken it upon themselves to elevate Shahpura's standing in Rajasthan's premium tourism circuit by offering understated luxury and marking a special moment in history on behalf of their ancestors. Their great grandfather's legacy of conservation has successfully greened this region in the heart of Rajasthan, and their involvement in the upliftment of the community has had an infinitely impactful effect. Guests at the mansion always appreciate their gentle and unobtrusive hospitality. Sat, who is a photographer and birder, is always happy to share clever tips on light and composition, and offer a quick introduction to the abundant birdlife that thrives on the estate if you enjoy these activities.

Experiences

Shahpura Bagh, spread across 40 acres, is a charming estate filled with lush trees and vegetation, and is home to a variety of beautiful birds that can be spotted during morning walks. The rest of the day can be spent lazing around, reading a book or taking a dip in the heated pool. For those interested in exploring rural India, there are several options such as farm visits, interactions with traditional Rajasthan phad artists, safaris to tribal villages, and visits to Shahpura town for photo opportunities and live snack counters. Private dinners for two can be arranged at secluded venues under the starlit sky, while birding enthusiasts can spot rare species on the property and by the lake.

Shahpura Bagh is also involved in several development and restoration projects, such as promoting education for girls in the local school, and guests are welcome to participate. Shahpura town offers many photo opportunities, especially in the evening when the market is bustling with live snack counters and colourful daily waves set out in carts.

The old fort of Dhikola, a treat for shutterbugs, is a great spot for tea and snacks during sunset. Shahpura also has a strong connection with the ancient art of Phad painting, and guests can enjoy a unique experience with the last family of artists who paint these life-size canvases depicting mythology and folklore.
