The Venue
Situated on the border of Kerala and the neighboring state of Karnataka, Wayanad is nestled at an elevation of 700-2,100 meters above sea level. Spanning across 23,000 hectares, it boasts extensive paddy cultivation and stands as one of the greenest regions in India. Wayanad remains relatively unexplored, making it a hidden gem of lush greenery in the country. Here, you can delve into the mysteries of Neolithic caves, gain insights into the workings of coffee estates, and embark on invigorating hikes to witness captivating waterfalls. If you seek authentic cultural experiences rather than staged Kathakali performances or typical tourist activities, Wayanad is the place to be.
One of the highlights of the region is the delightful tree houses, where you can enjoy your stay. These elevated walkways winding through the coffee plantation provide a fascinating access to the treehouses, offering a unique vantage point amidst the treetop canopies where birds make their homes. This experience is especially thrilling for children.
Pepper Trail is situated within the Mangalam Carp Estate, a historic spice and coffee plantation established in the 1800s by Colin Auley Mackenzie, a pioneering planter of the time. Mackenzie cultivated coffee, tea, and spices across 200 acres of the estate. In 1932, P. Balram Kurup acquired the estate and developed a keen interest in growing rare spices and aromatic plants. Thanks to his efforts, the plantation now boasts an impressive array of exotic flora in Wayanad. Currently managed by the third generation of the family, led by Anand Jayan, Pepper Trail strives to uphold the traditional farming methods established by its founders. Anand, who spent his summers at the estate surrounded by loved ones, chose a life in the hills over city living. This personal journey led him to restore the estate and open it up to visitors, giving birth to the story of Pepper Trail.
