Jehan Numa Retreat, Prempura, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India
If you're looking for cultural and wildlife experiences in central India, start by considering Jehan Numa Retreat in Prempura, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.

The Venue

Consider visiting Bhopal and its surrounding areas if you're looking for cities to explore. According to KOI, Bhopal is a city that should be included in popular travel itineraries again. With its close proximity to two World Heritage Sites - Sanchi and Bhimbekta - and being a gateway to important tiger reserves such as Satpura and Bori, Bhopal is an intriguing city to explore. Despite absorbing modernity at a rapid pace, the city still retains much of its old charm. It's an ideal destination to discover from Jehan Numa Retreat, which is adjacent to Van Vihar, one of the few urban forests in the area.

Who is hosting?

With a strong family history and a passion for hospitality and tourism, the Rashids are a prominent family in Bhopal. As descendants of the monarchical Begums of Bhopal, the Rashid family's ancestral home, the Jehan Numa Palace, was among the first hotels to establish itself in Bhopal's hospitality industry. The Jehan Numa group has since added modern accommodations such as the Retreat and a Lodge in Satpura, while nature and wildlife-centered lodges like the Jehan Numa Retreat, Reni Pani, and Bori Safari Lodge form a second group known as Jehan Numa Wilderness.

Aesthetics & Philosophy

The Retreat features composite clusters of suites and is situated amidst a farm of organic herbs and vegetables, shaded by wide canopied trees that are located near Van Vihar, which acts as Bhopal's natural oxygenator. It's a perfect getaway for tired professionals seeking a peaceful and rejuvenating weekend escape, where they can indulge in spa treatments and pursue quiet interests. The Retreat is also ideal for travelers who want to explore Bhopal city and the two World Heritage monuments that are located within an hour's drive radius. Wildlife enthusiasts who want to begin or end their jungle adventures can also make use of this property.

Whether you're here for business or pleasure, you'll find yourself in a beautiful location that's easily accessible from the city and other excursions. The entry to the property sets the tone with a short drive that leads to a wide clearing with a porch and an entrance that opens into a large lounge and reception. The Retreat's expansive layout, vibrant art, and green surroundings create a soothing atmosphere. The shaded and open lounge beyond the reception is perfect for relaxing with a book or enjoying a cup of tea while overlooking the farms and trees on the estate.

Accommodation

After crossing the lounge and reception area, you'll notice paths leading to both sides that lead to clusters of cottages. These cottages are divided into six clusters, each with 4-6 cottages, and a total of 28 cottages are available. The pathways leading to the cottages are beautiful, with shadows cast by the stone beams of the roof and plants on either side. The sound of birds singing adds to the pleasant atmosphere as you walk to your cottage.

Each cottage is designed to be spacious, with plenty of natural light and a comfortable bed for a good night's sleep or a quick nap during the day. The attached bathrooms have an exclusive dressing area, ample luggage space, and twin vanities. Sixteen of the cottages also have an outdoor shower. The modern, straight-line furniture includes a widescreen TV with multi-channel facilities, a tea/coffee station, and a writing desk near a large picture window that blends colonial and ethnic art.

However, the most remarkable feature of each cottage is the private sit-out area, which is adorned with lush greenery, delicate creepers, and an inviting outdoor lounge space for relaxation day or night. It's no surprise that waking up to the sounds of chirping birds is part of the daily meditative experience.

Dining at the Retreat offers a mix of salads and grills served outdoors under the Jamun Tree or a range of Indian and international cuisine indoors at the air-conditioned Coriander Leaf, which also has a bar. Guests particularly enjoy the evening dinners under the Jamun Tree, which are warmed by the quiet conversations and tall mushroom heaters. The Green House Bistro is the latest addition to the dining options, with a focus on farm-to-fork and the slow food movement.

Experience

The Retreat offers a five-bedroom Ayurvedic spa conveniently located near the pool, catering separately to men and women to provide relaxation when needed. The pool, surrounded by farms, is a great place to unwind at the end or beginning of your day. Bhopal is a year-round destination and can be combined with other cities like Gwalior or Indore to create exciting itineraries that connect to Agra, Jaipur, or Delhi. Bhopal itself is a city with plenty to see and do, including three world-class museums located close to each other on Shamla hills.

The Tribal Museum showcases folk and tribal art, including life-size displays of their dwellings and beliefs, while the Museum of Man provides interactive displays on human history and architecture from all over India. Bhopal has a rich history, from the reign of Begums to subtle influences by the Bourbons, and visitors can uncover this history through existing buildings and crafts with the help of an expert guide. Short excursions to Sanchi and Bhimbetka offer a glimpse into timelines that precede recorded history.

The urban forestry of Van Vihar provides an excellent morning excursion with a naturalist or a pleasant morning walk. Jehan Numa Retreat is perfect for families, with activities suitable for all ages, including the Museum of Man and Van Vihar, making it an ideal outdoor school for children. Bhopal is a city not to be missed, especially for history buffs, textile lovers, and foodies. With its great food and variety of activities, including food adventures, museum walks, and city walks, it is an excellent off-site destination for corporates. The Retreat is open throughout the year.

Conscious Travel

Jehan Numa Retreat is a serene and tranquil destination that offers stunning views of nature and vast open spaces. During the construction of this property, the flora was preserved, and no trees were cut to ensure harmony with the Van Vihar Urban National Park, which shares a boundary wall with the Retreat.

Green House Bistro, located next to a farm, is a new addition to the Retreat, emphasizing the slow food movement with a focus on the "farm to fork" concept. Nearly 70% of the required vegetables and herbs are grown and sourced from the farm, which uses organic practices such as multi-cropping, cow dung composting, and vermiculture. The fertile black soil is advantageous, and locals are employed to manage and grow the produce, creating employment opportunities.

Van Vihar Urban National Park, a drive-through zoo, is located adjacent to the Retreat, offering the opportunity to explore untouched flora and fauna and create unforgettable outdoor memories. Additionally, each room features a private deck opening to the wild.

The Retreat's strong conservation focus has created an ecosystem for birds and butterflies, making the area a resident's paradise. Peacocks may even welcome you in the morning.

Activities

The retreat offers a variety of activities for guests to indulge in, both indoors and outdoors. These include indoor games, pottery-making workshops, swimming, village walks, bird watching, hiking, yoga, cycling, mountain biking, wildlife interactions, art and craft sessions, farm activities, heritage walks, visits to museums, cultural day excursions, and religious/spiritual experiences.
